Body Moles – Key Facts

What are moles?

mole checkSkin moles are collections of cells that can be skin coloured or brown or occasionally darker. They can be either flat or raised depending on the type of mole. Moles can be completely harmless and have no real function or use but rarely they can change or new ones form. In these instances it is always important to get changing moles checked with your doctor just to ensure there is no suspicious or worrying signs of skin cancer.

Where do moles occur?

Skin moles on the body are common. They can irritate and get larger as we age and often catch on clothing and bras as well as rub in areas such as the armpits and between the legs. New moles can keep appearing as we get older and this can be normal however you must look out any changes in size shape and color particularly dark brown or black.

How moles can be removed?

There are numerous ways to remove moles from the skin which are simple, cheap and effective and almost leave no scar. The simplest dermatology procedure is to freeze them off however in most cases mole removal surgery or laser mole removal is required.

We advise against home remedies or creams that enable you to remove the moles by yourself as this can often cause worse scarring and potentially you could mistreat a skin cancer.

What do I need to look out for in my moles ?

  • Examine your skin all over including soles of your feet every 3 months – look for changes in size ,shape, colour (particularly dark moles) and over 5mm in size.
  • Remember 70% of all melanomas are new moles.
  • Most suspicious moles look different from all your other moles –‘ The Ugly Duckling Sign’
  • If in doubt consult your doctor see mole check page for further information

Absolutely thrilled with my new brows after nanoblading with Hayley at cosmedics. I’ve worked in the aesthetics industry myself for over 10 years I was so impressed with this clinic, Hayley is literally an artist when it comes to semi-permanent make up, nanoblading is the latest technique for a more natural but defined brow and the end results I have is literally perfect brows!! I couldn’t be happier!!

Dr Dan Thio did a wonderful job removing my cyst and leaving minimal scarring, he was very professional and made me feel very comfortable during the surgery. The price I paid on the day for the surgery also included aftercare, which in my case included being provided with steristrips and handful of dressings and also stitch removal appointments. I went back after 7 days to have my stitches removed, Dr Jennifer Todman assessed the area and decided to postpone my stitch removal for another 5 days. I felt very confident in her professional expertise and appreciated that they were happy to see me for a second stitch removal appointment at no additional cost. There is a definite patient over profit philosophy. 5 days later I saw Dr Britt Vardy at the Harley Street Clinic for my stitch removal, it was quick and painless. Dr Vardy too is very professional and makes you feel very comfortable. The see and treat service was brilliant, It was important for me to have my surgery as soon as possible. Most other places wouldn't see me for at least 8 weeks but just 8 days after my initial phone call to Cosmedics, I was in the Putney Surgery, having my surgery. Overall an extremely positive experience, Thank you to the team at the Putney and Harley Street Surgeries. Cosmedics will definitely be my first port of call should I ever require any of the other services they provide.

    1. The full body mole check is available in London clinics with specific doctors who are highly experienced in mole checks. However, if there is a particular mole or area of moles causing concern, our Bristol team would be very happy to review and advise. You can also send a photo to info@cosmedics.co.uk for advice in advance of your appointment. This doesn’t replace a consultation but can be a useful guide.
