About Anal Warts
Anal warts feel like a small lump in the anus. It can be quite uncomfortable as well as embarrassing.
Anal warts are classed as an STD (sexually transmitted disease) as they are generally caused by catching HPV (human papilloma virus) via sexual intercourse. See also genital warts.
The virus can stay dormant for many years, so it could relate to a previous partner, which makes the condition all the more awkward.

Anal Wart Removal FAQ: Questions & Answers
How are anal warts transmitted?
Anal warts are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) and are passed on through contact during sexual intercourse. It’s important to remember that they can remain dormant for many years before emerging, so it may relate to a previous partner.
Will anal warts come back again?
Anal warts are caused by a virus and it can take time for this to be eradicated by your immune system. That means that there is a small risk of recurrence in which case the treatments can be repeated.
When can I have sex after anal wart removal?
Normal sexual relationships can resume 7-10 days after the treatment, after the wound has sufficiently healed. We recommend waiting a week at least, just to avoid irritating or infecting the wound.
Do you offer STD/sexual health screening?
We offer private treatment for genital warts and anal skin tags. However, we do not offer full sexual health screening services. NHS sexual health clinics are able to offer a discrete rapid full set of screening tests for STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases) or STI’s (sexually transmitted infections). You can speak to your doctor first if you prefer, or else book direct at most sexual health clinics. It’s best to research local facilities online or call your GP surgery for initial advice.
Who will I see?
Your consultation and treatment will be with a GMC registered doctor. There is no pre-screening by a layperson and you will only need to discuss your warts with the person who would potentially be providing treatment.
