Before & After BELKYRA® chin/jawline injections
Available from February 2021 in London with Dr Ross Perry
The treatment is designed to treat ‘submental fullness’, which means dissolving excess fat beneath the chin. The eagerly awaited launch of BELKYRA® means that there is now a new and very appealing choice for treating this difficult area.
Compared to the higher price and risks attached to surgical options (such as liposuction or neck lifts), treatment with these innovative and effective fat-busting injections offers clear advantages for the patient.
It is a non-invasive treatment which has shown meaningful results in over 90% of patients.
It is ideal for those with a mild to moderate amount of fat beneath the chin, enabling the doctor to troubleshoot and target this area very precisely, breaking down the fatty deposits. However, this is not an alternative to diet and exercise where there is a more generalised weight or obesity issue.
London BELKYRA® Clinic
While BELKYRA® is new to the UK, it has been popular for a number of years in the USA, where it is known as Kybella. It has now been passed by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) for release in the UK.
Cosmedics Skin Clinics is one of the first to offer the procedure with their top Aesthetic Doctors in London.
We welcome enquiries for this exciting new treatment.
How Does BELKYRA® Work?
BELKYRA® (Kybella) is an injectable product which is based on deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is produced naturally in the body, where it works to help the body to absorb fat.
When injected into fatty tissues, the agent physically destroys the fat cells, breaking down deposits of fat for a smoother and more lean profile.
Treatment – What to Expect
BELKYRA® is administered as an injection into the fat tissue in the chin area (submental). Treatment involves up to 10-15 injections in total, using tiny acupuncture sized needles. For best results, doctors may recommend a course of treatments with 1-3 sessions 4-6 weeks apart.
Manufacturers Kythera Biopharmaceuticals Inc said over 90% of those who tried the drug maintained a meaningful reduction of fat after two years, based on trials across Europe and the United States.

Why do I have a double chin if I’m not overweight?
Double chins are not necessarily due to excess weight. Some normal and slim people can also be susceptible to storing fat in this area, even if they are healthy and active. It is often due to genetic predisposition. Facial structure can also emphasise the problem.
What is BELKYRA® made of?
The principal active ingredient in BELKYRA® is deoxycholic acid injection. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat that has been consumed in food.
When BELKYRA® is injected into the area beneath the chin, the injection destroys those excessive fat cells.
Is BELKYRA® treatment painful?
No, we ensure that the treatment is completely comfortable throughout. We can use numbing creams and local anaesthetic if required.
It stings for about 5-10 minutes and then feels like a dull ache. This is helped by using a cold compress after the injections.
After treatment, the area can feel very hot as the chemical gets to work, breaking down the fatty deposits. Any discomfort can be managed by applying a cold pack to the area and taking regular painkillers (i.e. paracetamol or ibuprofen). Any discomfort should subside within a few hours.
Are there any side-effects?
BELKYRA® is quite well tolerated and side-effects tend to be quite minor and short term.
You may get some swelling, bruising, discomfort, numbness, redness, areas of hardness, tingling or itchiness in the treatment area. These should pass within a few days. Patients are welcome and encouraged to contact our team for advice in case of any concerns.
Is there any swelling after BELKYRA® injections?
You can expect some initial swelling after treatment. This will be noticeable for the first 7-10 days that then settles over the next few weeks.
When will I see results appearing?
BELKYRA® isn’t instant, it takes around 4 weeks for the fat to be expelled from the body. However, each treatment session will start the process and trigger further improvements. Optimum results will be developed by around 4-6 weeks after your final treatment session.
How many treatments will I need?
Normally 1-3 treatment sessions are advised to get the best results. These will be carried out about 4-6 weeks apart.
We often recommend a course of treatments because each successive session will destroy an additional amount of fat, gradually improving the contour of the chin.
Your treatment plan will be discussed and agreed at your first consultation appointment with the Doctor/Surgeon who would be carrying out the treatment.
Is BELKYRA® treatment permanent?
Once the fat cells have been removed from your body they’re gone. You cannot produce more fat cells, so results can be permanent.
However, if you gain weight, the remaining/existing fat cells can increase in size.
We always recommend maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle for best results in the long term.
Can I use BELKYRA® for other areas of fat? (belly, arms etc)
BELKYRA® is only approved for treating the double chin area. It is not suitable for use elsewhere on the face or body.
What happens to the fat?
BELKYRA® breaks down and destroys fat cells. These are then permanently eliminated from the body via normal metabolic processes.
