The causes of thread veins can vary, but they are most commonly a result of family history, smoking or sun exposure.

For the red spider veins on the face and particularly the nose we use a cautery laser to remove the redness.

For broken veins on the legs, our doctors generally use injectable treatments called sclerotherapy to remove the blueish red marks on the skin.

Prices for facial thread vein treatments start at £300

Costs for leg veins injections start at £300 and laser treatment for facial veins from £350. Please contact us for information about treatment for varicose veins, which usually appear on the legs and appear lumpy and blue in colour.

All thread vein and spider vein removal procedures are done by doctors in a safe medical setting.

Private Doctor Consultation

Your consultation with a doctor will be completely private and without obligation. It will review your thread veins or spider veins in detail. The doctor will want to understand the cause and nature of your veins before recommending treatment. This includes how long you have had the veins, the possible cause, the spread of them and more.

Thread Vein Treatment

Thread veins typically occur on the face, nose, legs and body.

Face and nose thread veins or spider veins:

  • usually red veins
  • often caused by excessive sun damage, smoking or due to family genes
  • these are treated by laser to seal off these unsightly blemishes

Leg thread veins

  • that are an unsightly blue-reddy colour
  • often found on the back of the knee, thighs and lower legs
  • treated by an injection called sclerotherapy that seals off the veins
  • can take a few weeks before the results are seen as the vessels need to dissolve
  • this treatment is best done in the autumn, winter and spring as tight stockings are generally needed to be worn for a week afterwards

Who would benefit from thread vein removal treatments?

Anyone with unsightly or embarrassing veins or spider veins on their legs or face.

How much is treatment?

Treatment prices start at £300, but this would be confirmed at your consultation with the doctor. It is important to note that sometimes more than one session is required to get long lasting results and sometimes a maintenance session is required.

Which is the best treatment – laser or sclerotherapy?

Laser is used mainly for thin, small lines on the face and occasionally on the legs. Sclerotherapy is better for larger bluey-red-purple thread veins on the legs.

Do the thread vein treatments hurt?

No. Only, a mild scratch-like discomfort that is over in seconds (sclerotherapy) or a quick sting (laser).

What results would I see?

The thread veins would be removed and blemish-free skin revealed, giving you the confidence to wear what you want.

Occasionally a few treatment sessions are required to get optimal results normally about a month apart.

The results can last for up to a few years before the natural skin effects means that sometimes they recur or new veins appear due to the skins natural tendency to form these veins.

Can I return to work and normal activities?

In most cases ‘yes’.

Do I have to wear stockings?

To ensure long lasting results it is important to note that clients who have leg scelotherapy treatment should wear compression class 2 stockings for a minimum of 48 hour post treatment but can be worn for up to 1 month post treatment. These are soon to be available to purchase at our Putney clinic or on line but can also be purchased at chemists.

Are there any side-effects from the thread vein treatment?

Occasionally you get some bruising and redness which settles in a week or so. Rarely some light brown marks can be left where the vein once was, but this normally settles.

Are thread vein removal treatments available on the NHS?

No it is classed as a cosmetic treatment and therefore not covered on the NHS.

What should I expect after treatment?

Patients often experience some redness afterwards from a few days to 1-2 weeks according to how many veins are needed to be treated and those with fairer skin types typically take a bit longer to recover. Lots of moisturising is advised afterwards and application of sunblock.

  1. I have many areas of thread veins over both my legs. Is the cost of £250 – £350 for a whole treatment or just one area.

    1. This price is a guide – exact treatment cost will depend on time and how much treatment is needed, which is assessed in consultation with our doctor and quoted at that time. 1. Thank you for your enquiry. The technique for treating these will depend according to the type of thread veins. Please could you email a photo in confidence to and we’ll ask a doctor for some advice. This doesn’t replace a consultation, but should give you an idea as to what’s involved.

  3. Hi

I’m deciding between laser treatment or the foam injections for a few small areas of thread veins on my legs and wonder if you could advise which treatment would be better? Are they both permanent solutions? Is there a reason why the foam injections are performed on the legs rather than laser treatment?

    1. In general, laser treatment would suit smaller thread veins, sclerotherapy for larger ones, while foam sclerotherapy can be used to treat smaller varicose veins or blue veins in the legs.
Normally a doctor or vascular consultant would need to recommend which treatment would be most appropriate, based on the size and nature of the veins. If you wish, you can email a photo to and we will try to give some advice from that – this doesn’t replace a face to face consultation, but many patients find it helpful to get an idea in advance of their appointment.

  4. Dear Clinic,

I have few thread veins around my nose. Can the treatment – I mean laser – cause any scar? Few people got permanent scar after treatment, and I would like to know the reason of this. Have you ever treat people to got any permanent scar after laser?

    1. Hi, please send a photo in confidence to and we’ll ask a doctor to advise the likely cost. This would be confirmed at consultation when they’ve seen your veins properly, but we can give a very good estimation from a picture.
