Dermal Fillers
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers or ‘fillers’ as they are known are a gel like substance called hyaluronic acid that is injected into skin to lift and plump out areas that have lost collagen as a result of the natural ageing process.
The injections rejuvenate the skin achieving an instant fresher younger appearance that just makes you look your best. The dermal filler injections are temporary however they achieve fantastic, long-lasting results. The active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, is naturally found in the skin, tendons and muscles of humans and therefore naturally combats an array of natural aging symptoms such as wrinkles, aging lines, nasolabial folds (1), crow’s feet, frown lines and ‘sad mouth lines’. It can also be used to augment cheek, temple and lip volume.
For some patients more advanced treatments such as thread lifts may ultimately be the most appropriate procedure to achieve the desired results. But minimally invasive treatments, such as dermal fillers, can help delay a more invasive procedure.
Only the best Dermal Fillers
At Cosmedics we only use the latest FDA approved dermal fillers such as the Juvederm (2) and Profhilo range of dermal fillers to treat and enhance various areas of the face.
The commonest areas treated are the cheeks, nose to mouth lines and lip areas.
With new technology advances including using anaesthetic in the gel (3) injections are painless. In addition new ‘soft injections’ called cannulas have the advantage of minimal or no bruising and treating areas that were previously too hard to reach. These advanced techniques we use at Cosmedics can now fill out and hydrate hollows, lift jowls and define the chin and jaw areas. Other treatment areas for dermal fillers in include lip enhancement, non-surgical nose job and an 8 point face lift.
Who are dermal fillers for?
Dermal filler treatments typically seek to reduce the signs of ageing and rejuvenate the facial appearance by restoring volume and fullness to the face area such as
- Soften ageing facial lines and wrinkles
- Plump thin lips
- Improve tired, gaunt looking skin
- Help with confidence in appearance and get ‘mojo’ back
- Decrease sunken cheeks, temples and lower lids or ‘tear troughs’
Dermal filler benefits
Dermal fillers are a popular treatment option for a number of reasons
- Dermal fillers take as little as 10 to 15 minutes to administer, there is no downtime required at all, so once you have had your fillers, you are free to return to work and the rest of your day-to-day activities,
- Dermal fillers treatment produces fast results. The differences will be obvious immediately and the best result is visible a few days later.
- The results look natural and can be so subtle that it will not be obvious that you have had fillers. However if you are seeking a more dramatic looking result, we can help you achieve this too.
- Dermal fillers can be carried out alongside other treatments to enhance the overall result, for example fillers can be used alongside botox in an 8 point lift.
- Lastly another benefit of using dermal fillers is that they can stimulate natural collagen and elastin production (4), which are vital to maintaining plump, youthful skin and can often prolong the effects of the treatment.

Dermal Filler Treatment Areas
Dermal fillers can be used on various areas of the face to restore lost volume and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. The use of fillers on even just one area of the face can leave the whole face looking rejuvenated and lifted.
Depending on what you hope to achieve, you can have dermal fillers injected into a number of areas in the same treatment.
- Lips – dermal fillers can used to restore lost plumpness, thin lips when smiling or the disappearing lip, create a more defined lip shape around the philtrum and vermillion border to accentuate lip liner and lipstick.
- Cheeks – restore youthful plumpness to this part of the face, lifting the cheek bones and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Cheek fillers can eliminate the problem of sunken cheeks, which are a natural sign of aging.
- Nasolabial folds – the smile creases or lines that get deeper with age and can make us look tired which when lifted give an instant boost to the face.
- Glabellar lines – the deep frown lines sometimes don’t respond to botox so dermal fillers will help restore this line to it former fullness
- Chin – to help with ‘weak’ chins or dimpling and enhance the jawline profile
- Marionette lines – the lines from the corners of the mouth that make us look grumpy and sad can be lifted and also soften any jowls
- Jaw – dermal fillers here tend to help with jowls and creating a better jaw profile that is less saggy in its appearance
- Forehead – super light fillers used here to soften lines that botox cant reach are too deep.
- Temples – dermal fillers here help reduce a gaunt / weight loss appearance and give a more rounded shape to the upper part of the face
- Tear troughs – tired heavy eyes due to the hollows can be lifted with combination of cheek and lower eyelid dermal fillers
- Nose – non surgical rhinoplasty to help smooth of contour irregularities particularly a bump in the dorsum of the nose
- 8 point lift – multiple areas treated with dermal filler to achieve a global enhancement

Dermal Filler FAQ: Questions & Answers
What are facial/dermal fillers?
Face fillers are the second most common anti-ageing injectable treatment after BOTOX. Dermal fillers are different from BOTOX® in that rather than relaxing out the wrinkles they fill out the lines, wrinkles and lift the face.
The face fillers are made from a natural gel that literally fills out any depressions, hollows and creases in the facial skin. These fillers, when positioned in certain areas such as the cheeks and jowls, can create a lifting of the face that is both subtle and natural-looking. They can also be used to plump up lips and correct any symmetry of facial areas as well as help with tired-looking eyes or ‘tear troughs’. The face filler lift effects can not only make you look younger but also more rested and fresh-faced.
What age should you get fillers?
If you’re looking to a dermal filler to combat signs of aging, your mid-20s is often a good time to start. Your body starts to lose bone and collagen around age 26, so it’s a good time to begin maintenance injections. By starting early, you’ll require less product than if you wait until your mid-50s
How long do dermal fillers last?
At Cosmedics we use a range of dermal fillers to suit the area we are treating so some of the softer more hydrating fillers will last 6-12 months; whilst the stronger volumizing fillers will last 12-18 months
How much do dermal fillers cost UK?
The cost of dermal fillers starts from £420 and depends on things like the type of product and number of syringes used, and the complexity of the area being treated. They tend can last for a year or more depending on the product used; so while they can be more expensive than Botox the overall cost is comparable given how long they last and also has the added benefit of needing less frequent injections.
The dermal filler injections take 30-45 minutes and you can carry on your normal activities straight after but would maybe plan your diary so you gave any major events for a few days after to let the best results be visible.
At Cosmedics we have treated over 12,000 patients with face fillers and have a wealth of expertise that enables us to help you achieve the facial appearance you are aiming for without compromising on safety or our honest opinion on whether face fillers are the right treatment for you. Our dedicated advisors have a huge knowledge about fillers so you can discuss with them how you feel and what interests you.
Are fillers better than botox?
Like botox, dermal fillers are an injection to help with ageing. Dermal fillers are used typically in the mid and lower parts of the face whilst BOTOX® is used in the upper third of the face. They both compliment each other to give a overall full face rejuvenation.
What can I expect after a dermal filler treatment?
After the treatment you will notice some swelling in the areas that were treated. Some bruising may develop over the next 1-2 days that lasts for 4-5 days. The day after sometimes there is still some swelling which is normal and can be covered with make up. Whilst you will see instant improvements, the best filler results are seen 4-7 days later.
Why do fillers sometimes not look good?
Dermal filler treatments that are obvious are normally due to overzealous practitioners who simply over inject too much filler. At Cosmedics our aim is for NATURAL results and if we feel it wont work for you we will tell you.
Face dermal fillers in London & Bristol
Cosmedics only have experienced doctors and plastic surgeons offering dermal fillers in our London and Bristol clinics. We only use face fillers that are the FDA approved range of natural dissolvable fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane. This ensures that patients who see us know their safety is our number one priority above all else. People who request filler treatments have often tried Botox with great success and then feel that other areas of the face are showing telltale signs of ageing.
People like the rejuvenating effects of dermal fillers for the face as the before and after results are immediately visible, unlike Botox which can take 7-10 days to appear. There is little swelling and possible bruising in the areas where the dermal fillers were injected that settles down and fade within a few days and can be covered with makeup.
Where can dermal fillers be of benefit?
Fillers can give a natural lift and fullness that makes you look fresher and younger by replacement of the lost collagen. Popular treatments include:
- Deeper lines and wrinkles
- Frown lines
- Nose to mouth lines
- Cheeks and chin enhancement
- Mouth & lip lines > see lip enhancement
- Nose reshaping > see non-surgical nose job
- Look fresher and younger without the need for surgery > see 8 point face lift
Can fillers for the face be used with Botox®?
Yes, sometimes to create the best effect they can be used together. Botox injections.
How easy is it to get these treatments done?
Once you have made a booking your consultation will be with one of our doctors. You will be able to discuss all the treatment options and decide what is the best procedure for you. Facial filler treatments can be done at the same initial appointment, if you are happy to go ahead, by the same doctor.
What else can fillers be used for?
The hyaluronic acid gel that is made by cross linking to ensure the longevity and durability also enables this product to be used for medical purposes outside of cosmetic medicine. Examples of such are for back pain where the gel is re injected into the disc of a old vertebral disc to help increase the disc space between the bones of the back so they don’t rub and irritate the surrounding nerves that cause the pain. Filler injections are also used for areas where knee cartilage has worn away through over use or injury. Rare uses are for clitoral stimulation or vaginal rejuvenation or in some cases to help with bladder incontinence by raising the neck of the bladder upwards. Trials have also been ongoing for anal fistulas but have not had a great deal of success so far.
Can I go straight back to work?
Yes. There will be a little redness, slight swelling and occasionally a small bruise that may last 1 to 2 days. These can all be covered with make-up.
Are there any side-effects from having these anti-wrinkle rejuvenation treatments?
With dermal fillers there can be redness, swelling and bruising, which is normal and which does subside.
What results can I expect from facial fillers like Restylane or Juvederm?
The results will be immediate. Your skin will be smoother and younger-looking. Once any swelling has subsided the results will be subtle and pleasing. See our before and after results.
How long will it take to administer the facial fillers?
Depending on the area treated, approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Are filler injections painful?
The injections are now used with anaesthetic in the actual filler to ensure that the treatments are not painful. For certain procedures numbing cream can also be applied that maybe in more sensitive areas such as the mouth and lips.
What is the best facial filler to use?
There are lots of different types of filler that are used for filling out lines; each has different benefits and effects.
Restylane and Perlane
These are our most popular alternatives to collagen replacement therapy and do not require an initial 28-day skin test. Restylane and Perlane are dermal fillers consisting of a non-animal clear gel that will help smooth your wrinkles and folds and create contours. It can also be used to provide lip enhancement if required. Restylane and Perlane will generally remain in the treated area for some months following your treatment, giving it natural-looking volume and contours. Restylane is used for fine lines whilst Perlane is used for deeper wrinkles and folds.
Juvederm Ultra
Another natural facial line filler with the advantage of built-in anaesthetic for a more comfortable experience. It does not last as long as restylane but does give a softer look and is particularly useful for our younger patients.
How soon will I see results?
After the procedure the filler results are immediate and you can see the full rejuvenated results of your skin that same day. Often our patients say their friends comment on how well they look and less tired as well as a little younger.
Do facial fillers help the removal of wrinkles?
Facial fillers like Restylane and Juvederm Ultra injections are an ideal anti-wrinkle treatment for facial rejuvenation and anti-ageing. Ideally for anyone wanting to have some removal of lines by filling them out especially for the nose to mouth area, crow’s feet (lines around the eyes) or lines around the mouth. Many patients also choose to have this filler treatment to plump up thin upper lips, restoring a nice youthful look. Patients who would like to redefine and soften the contours of their face also turn to dermal fillers as the results are so natural and subtle.
