Moles and The Sun

summerThe summer of 2013 will go down in everybody’s memory as being the hottest for years.

A summer where the sun actually shone…

Yet while being out in the warmth has been enjoyable, for many of us it has involved, if we’re honest, some accidental over-exposure to the sun.

The risks of sun exposure are well documented and include premature ageing, lines, wrinkles and pigmentation issues such as freckles or the appearance of moles.

Why the Sun Causes Moles

The sun’s UVA and UVB rays penetrate the skin and can cause alteration of the cells. More exposure to the sun can cause more moles to appear.

The most dangerous consequence of sun exposure is moles that are malignant melanoma – as this is a deadly form of skin cancer.

It is therefore very important to be vigilant for changes in moles. You are looking for ‘unusual’ or ‘suspicious’ moles. This could be a fast-growing new mole or else a pre-existing mole that changes size, shape, colour or starts to bleed, itch or redden.

Any concerns should be reported to the GP as soon as possible. Mole removal is a quick procedure and if there is a genuine medical concern this is carried out by the NHS.

Unfortunately, mole removal for non-medical reasons is considered a cosmetic procedure, so this would be in private clinics such as Cosmedics Skin Clinics under local anaesthetic as a day case.

Mole Removal London, Bristol

Cosmedics Skin Clinics offer both laser mole removal and mole removal surgery, modern techniques which should only leave minimal scarring when performed by skilled and experienced GMC accredited doctors who have removed literally thousands of moles over the years.

Cosmedics also offer a full mole check which is carried out by a doctor. This is ideal for those that are not confident or able  to carry out a mole check themselves, or who are concerned about moles and want a professional opinion.

All moles are sent away for clinical testing and this service is arranged at cost, for patients peace of mind. Moles can usually be removed same day and patients can save on the cost of subsequent moles removed in the same session.

Cosmedics was established in 2003 and remains a doctor owned and managed company.  The company has 5 clinics in London plus one in Bristol.
