The summer special health and beauty edition in Woman and Home features the common issue of spider veins on the legs.
The article introduced the issue saying:
“If your shorts are getting longer every year in an attempt to hide your legs, perhaps you’re plagued by spider veins.”
Also known as thread veins, these are usually found on the thighs. These small red veins can be even more noticeable in the summer.
Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ founder Dr Ross Perry was invited to provide expert advice.
He explained:
“Using make-up to conceal the veins is the best home care solution”
However, many patients would prefer to get rid of the problem altogether, rather than try to cover it up. Straightforward medical treatments are available:
“For legs the best treatment is injection sclerotherapy – where a sugary solution is injected into the vein.”
This injection irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to swell and then seal closed. In time, the body will destroy the vein and it will disappear. The blood simply flows through other veins, deeper beneath the skin.
