Refinery29: Retinol Skincare Hero
Retinol Skincare
Online lifestyle and beauty site Refinery29 looks at Retinol
Dr Ross Perry advises on this powerful skincare ingredient.
Retinol is another name for vitamin A, a skincare ingredient which emerged in the 80s as being a highly effective ingredient in the war on wrinkles and breakouts.
The article explains:
“Even 30 years on, “there are no new products that can rival retinol” explains Dr. Ross Perry.
“There is an encyclopaedic amount of research to justify its utter brilliance but here’s what you really need to know.
“Its prowess lies in its ability to rev up cell turnover to lightning speed, which is the aim of the game in our quest for glowing skin.”
Retino works by binding itself to skin cell receptors, then triggers renewal, making so much new skin that top layers of dead skin fall off.
Retinol Irritation?
Refinery29 feature explains:
“There’s also one big drawback. Retinol causes so much irritation that most people give up on it before they see results. As a consequence, it’s been unable to shake its stigma, losing out to South Korea’s bright, quirky and highly advanced formulations.
“New breakthroughs, however, are finally challenging the status quo – the next generation of retinol-based products might be one of beauty’s biggest comebacks.”
These include ‘encapsulation’ of the retinol in nanoparticles, making it more stable. This technique is used in Murad’s Retinol Youth Serum. Other approaches to making retinol more user-friendly is newer formulations of vitamin A which are more light stable and creating a vitamin A without encapsulation which doesn’t irritate the skin.
The concluding advicer is:
- If you’ve never tried a retinol/vitamin A product before, build up your tolerance levels starting with a lower strength formulation – retinol starts at about 0.25%
- Always use sunscreen as retinol makes the skin more sensitive to the sun
- If in any doubt, see a professional skincare practitioner for advice
