Harley Street Emporium: Dr Ross Perry on Pollution
Skin care expert Dr Ross Perry provided expert advice for Harley Street Emporium’s latest feature on pollution and its effects on the skin.
The article explains how pollution can have a major impact on health:
“The World Health Organisation claims air pollution is linked to one in eight deaths worldwide, and pollution through cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, wood burners and industry has been linked to a whole raft of diseases from dementia to heart disease to cancer.
“And it’s pretty disastrous for our looks too. Our skin is our largest organ and it bears the brunt of the daily assault our environment throws at us – prematurely aging and irritating it.”
Various research and academic studies have linked high levels of pollution to the appearance of ageing conditions such as smile lines, age spots, wrinkles and sagging; while atmospheric toxins have been shown to have a direct link to eczema, psoriasis and acne.
Dr Ross Perry explains to Harley Street Emporium how pollution can affect the skin:
“Dr Ross Perry, GP and medical director of the Cosmedics Skin Clinics chain, says pollution can affect us in two ways – through allergens or irritants landing on the skin and by breathing in damaging particles.
‘Pollution may make acne and rosacea much worse as irritant particles in the air lead to more inflammation and can worsen allergies and dermatitis conditions like eczema…
‘…And pollutants can also activate allergies for the first time, for example, if someone moves from the country to an inner city.'”
Advice for Beating Pollution’s Effects on Skin
The article features advice and tips on how to reduce the anti-ageing impact of pollution on the skin.
- Cleansing – thorough cleansing at the end of every day is even more vital after exposure to pollution, using a gentle but effective formulation
- Antioxidants – these rebalance the skin. Antioxidant rich food (broccolli, berries, beans, kale) and vitamin C serums can help
- Protection – pollution has damaged the ozone layer, so it’s vital to use high protection sunscreen to protect against harmful rays
- Ingredients – look for vitamin A, C and E as well as SPF protection in moisturisers and serums
- Home – indoor pollution can be reduced by regular hoovering and even an air purifier. Formaldehyde in cleaning solutions is best avoided
