What Are Genital Warts

Genital warts are found on both men and women on, around or inside the genitalia:

• Women – most commonly on the outer labia or inner thighs; can also appear on the vagina, vulva, cervix, anus
• Men – most commonly on the penis; can also appear on the scrotum, urethra, anus, groin, thighs

They appear as flesh-toned or grey growths with a rough, bumpy texture. There may be just one, but sometimes they can grow in clusters.

They may cause no discomfort at all and may not even be noticeable. Sometimes they can become itchy. Depending on where they are they may be bothersome if “in the way”. Almost always they are unwelcome and embarrassing.

The virus can remain in the body and be passed on before warts become noticeable, or after they have disappeared.

What Causes Genital Warts

Genital warts are in fact a form of STI (sexually transmitted infection). They are caused by a virus known as the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are more than 100 different types of HPV, of which 30-40 can cause problems in the genital area. However, the vast majority of genital warts are caused by just two types, HPV-6 and HPV-11.

Just as warts are passed from person to person through contact, so genital warts are passed with body contact, usually during sexual intercourse.
