Expert Medical Advice from Dr Ross Perry

Featured In Express

Cosmedics founder and GP Dr Ross Perry shared his expert advice for an article in the Express, which warns people about melanoma skin cancer lesions which can develop with age.

The article is entitled:

“Be vigilant of cancer that occurs in your 50s, 60, or 70 – can be seen on the feet”

The article sought expert advice from GP and Cosmedics founder Dr Ross Perry, who warned that skin cancer is a ‘year round problem’. In a person’s 50s, 60s or 70s, Ross explained what factors influence whether you might be affected. He commented that it included an element of ‘bad luck’.

“For melanoma cancer this can often be related to other factors such as family history, your skin type and if you have lots of moles.

“And not always directly related to the amount of sun you have been exposed to.”

Melanoma is a ‘worrying’ form of skin cancer as it has the highest risk of spreading elsewhere in the body.

Melanoma risk factors

The article outlines 4 factors which are associated with higher risk of developing melanoma:

  • Family history of melanoma
  • A large number of moles
  • Fairer skin types
  • Sunburns

Check for melanoma

Dr Perry continued:

“It is always important to check your skin and all of your skin, even the soles of your feet.

“You must also check the “backs of your legs and areas where you do not have sun exposure.

“Most importantly if you are noticing any changes or anything new, then go and get checked immediately.”

What is melanoma?

Melanoma is the 5th most common form of cancer in the UK. It accounts for over 1 in 4 skin cancer cases diagnosed in the under 50s.

The NHS says:

“Melanoma is caused by skin cells that begin to develop abnormally.”

“A mole that changes size over time is more likely to be a melanoma.”

Mole removal

Many people choose to have large or unsightly moles removed for peace of mind. When the mole is deemed ‘cosmetic’, such treatment is very rarely available on the NHS. However, mole removal for cosmetic reasons is a very common procedure and one which Cosmedics Skin Clinics carry out in great number. As leading UK providers of mole removal, the company has a team of expert doctors and surgeons who offer mole removal treatment using pain-free techniques and minimal scarring results.

Mole removal consultation

The first step is to arrange a private mole check consultation appointment with one of Cosmedics’ doctors or surgeons. They will assess the blemish and advise on the best course of treatment. They’ll also outline what to expect in terms of recovery and aftercare as well as the type of result patients can expect.
