Vitamin Drips

The Daily Mail investigated the trend for vitamin drips, which are said to boost energy and refresh tired skin.

The feature is entitled:

“The women who spend thousands on vitamin drips they swear boost energy, beat hangovers and cure colds (and they don’t give a hoot about experts who say it’s a waste of money)”

Devotees of intravenous drip treatment include celebrities Rita Ora, Simon Cowell, Sienna Miller and Cara Delevingne. These celebs have used vitamin drips for a variety of reasons. As the Daily Mail explains:

“Indeed, beauty clinics claim their elusive cocktails of vitamins can cure everything from jet lag to hangovers, as well as pepping up jaded complexions.”

However, there are critics of the treatment too:

“…experts remain unconvinced by the purported benefits. Many say they could be detrimental to our health and are nothing short of a moneymaking con. Indeed, one IV vitamin session alone can cost up to £450 — and several are recommended for maximum effect.”

The Daily Mail asked cosmetic and medical experts to give their advice, including Cosmedics Skin Clinics founder Dr Ross Perry, who was somewhat sceptical as to the use of vitamin drips for improving the complexion. He told the Daily Mail:

“There’s evidence to show vitamins C and E can help against sun damage, but I would say they’re better applied topically to protect the epidermis [the top layer of skin].

“The only benefit I can see is from hydration — but drinking water, while not as quick, would probably have the same effect. It’s a ‘look at me, aren’t I trendy?’ fad.”
