When it comes to anti-ageing treatments, there is a school of thought that having injections, facials or using heavy creams could actually be detrimental in the long term.

Could anti-ageing treatments actually play a role in speeding up the ageing process?

We asked skin treatment expert and GP Dr Ross Perry whether having procedures designed to make you look younger could actually damage the skin or otherwise make you look older.

Dr Perry, Founder and Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, explained:

“Anti ageing treatments have gone through a revolution in the last 10-15 years with noticeable clinically proven benefits.

“People are also more aware of how to look after their skin which also helps.

“Any treatments that would possibly cause any harm is only as a result of over zealous treatment and inappropriate use. This typically happens with patients who constantly want more and some practitioners either feeling obliged to treat them or the patient simply shop around to find less ethically based practitioners who don’t say no.

Botox and fillers if used appropriately and for the right reasons definitely slow the ageing of our skin and have positive effect on appearance.  However, if like anything that is over used and abused it looks unnatural and can be perceived as making people look less like themselves and weird / older.

“Using anti ageing creams ingredients that help attack antioxidants and block UV rays can only be beneficial in preventing damage to the skins DNA and as a result protect the skin helping it to not age quicker.

“Facials are gentle exfoliating and cleansing as well as adding moisture and are a treat and should be thought of in that way. They will gentle help mild skin conditions but in themselves will not make a huge difference to anti-ageing other than to give your skin a pampering that lasts for a few days.”
