Now Magazine: The Agony of Adult Acne
Now Magazine’s recent feature on adult acne looked at the battles troubled skin can cause.
As the article says:
“Everyone gets the occasional breakout, but adult acne is a serious skin condition that can leave some sufferers physically and psychologically damaged.”
Celebrities are not immune – Georgia Toffolo (Made in Chelsea’s Toff), Stacey Solomon, Katy Perry and Kendall Jenner are among those who’ve spoken out about their skin issues.
The article looks at the condition and possible treatments. It also assesses the potential impact on mental health – with expert advice from Dr Ross Perry.
Acne & Mental Health – Expert Advice from Dr Ross Perry
The British Skin Foundation figures state that 95% of acne sufferers say the condition has an impact on their lives and 63% experience a lack of confidence. Acne can be a contributing factor in depression and even suicide, while over a third of acne sufferers say they self-harm or have considered it due to their skin.
Dr Ross Perry was invited to give his expert advice. He says:
“It is easy to feel self-conscious about having spots, but most people won’t notice.
“Having acne is a condition that affects most of us at some point in our lives and, for most of us, it’ll come and go.
“Acne can damage self-esteem in adults who feel they should’ve grown out of it, especially as we see so much flawless skin on social media. But remember, no one has perfect skin in real life. That’s why it’s great to see celebs showing their breakouts.”
