Stubborn Thumb Wart Removal: Radiosurgery Demo & Before and After Results

Some warts can be surprisingly difficult to get rid of. Over-the-counter treatments may work for some people, but persistent or painful warts can sometimes require professional treatment.

In this short video, Dr Ross Perry demonstrates the removal of a stubborn wart from the tip of a patient’s thumb using radiosurgery under local anaesthetic. The wart removal procedure takes less than five minutes, followed by a short healing period.

The case shown in the video involved a wart on the tip of the thumb that had become painful and uncomfortable. After assessment, radiosurgery was used to remove the wart under local anaesthetic.

The video also shows the before and after results and gives an indication of what the treated area can look like during the healing process.

How does radiosurgery remove a wart?

Radiosurgery uses high-frequency radio waves to precisely treat and remove targeted tissue. At Cosmedics, it can be used for a range of skin lesions and selected warts following an appropriate clinical assessment.

For this particular case, the wart was treated under local anaesthetic, meaning the area was numbed before the procedure. Dr Perry was able to remove the wart in under five minutes.

One of the advantages of a small, targeted procedure is that it can be carried out quickly, without the need for a lengthy treatment session.

What happens after wart removal?

Following radiosurgery, the treated area may initially resemble a small graze or superficial wound. The skin then needs time to heal.

In the case shown in the video, the area was expected to heal over approximately one week. Healing times can vary depending on the location and size of the treated area, as well as the individual patient.

Keeping the area clean and following the aftercare advice provided by your clinician is important while the skin heals.

What if a wart won’t go away?

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and can sometimes persist despite attempts at home treatment. Repeatedly applying over-the-counter preparations may not be appropriate for every lesion, particularly if it is painful, difficult to treat or the diagnosis is uncertain.

A persistent growth should be assessed professionally before deciding on treatment. Not every lump, bump or rough area of skin is necessarily a wart, so confirming the diagnosis is an important first step.

If a lesion is changing, bleeding, becoming increasingly painful or behaving differently from a typical wart, it should be medically assessed rather than repeatedly treated at home.
