Dr Ross Perry – Skin Tags
Health website NetDoctor has issued an article on skin tags by Dr Ross Perry, Founder and Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics.
The article takes a full review of the subject and is entitled:
“Skin tag removal, causes and treatment tips”
As a leading UK expert in skin lesions such as skin tags (as well as warts, cysts and mole removal), Dr Ross Perry explains that skin tags are medically harmless. However, some people find them irritating or visually unappealing.
What are skin tags?
Dr Ross Perry explains that skin tags are:
“…small areas of overgrown skin tissue, which stick out from the surface of the skin. They tend to be quite small initially. Most stay at around 2-3mm, but might grow to protrude quite noticeably, or develop into papilloma, a larger version of a skin tag which can reach 5mm or more.
They don’t spread, but can become more numerous, as Dr Perry explains:
“Over time, more skin tags are likely to develop so that the patient has a patch or crop of skin tags.”
What do skin tags look like?
Ross describes them as:
“…protruding bits of skin, sticking out like little pillars. They tend to be quite soft and flexible and can be flicked from side to side.”
“They do not have the speckled ‘cauliflower’ appearance which characterises warts and are not uncomfortable or painful in themselves.”
Why do I have skin tags?
As Dr Perry explains, there is sometimes a genetic predisposition – so if your parents or grandparents had a lot, you may too.
Other factors are excess weight and tight clothing (such as badly fitting underwear), as this can increase the risk of rubbing, which in turn can cause skin tags.
Should I get rid of them?
Skin tags are not a medical problem. The main concern with skin tags is usually cosmetic, as Dr Perry says:
“…they can look unpleasant, especially when they are on the face or neck or a large crop appears.
“The other issue is that skin tags can catch on clothing or in zippers or jewellery, which can be very painful.”
Skin tag removal options
Dr Perry tells NetDoctor:
“The best solution for removing skin tags is to have them professionally treated using cryotherapy (freezing), surgical excision or laser treatment.”
Dr Perry adds:
“After any treatment, it is also important to consider whether any lifestyle changes might help to prevent them recurring eg weight loss or changing style of clothing/underwear.”
