Haemorrhoid Banding – Effective Band Ligation Treatment
Cosmedics offers haemorrhoid banding (ligation) in London as a minimally invasive, cost-effective treatment for internal haemorrhoids that have not responded to conservative care.
This quick procedure places a small band around the base of the pile to restrict blood flow, causing it to shrink and fall off with minimal discomfort and a short recovery period. Performed by expert colorectal surgeons, banding provides long-term relief and a safe, effective alternative to more invasive surgery.

Consultations are with our team of leading consultant colorectal surgeons in our Harley Street and City of London clinics.
During the consultation you will have a detailed consultation about your concerns. The examination normally requires a proctoscopy examination which is a gentle quick procedure to identify if there are any haemorrhoids or any other issues. A treatment plan can then be discussed and you can then return at a later date to have them treated at a convenient time. Consultations are valid for 3 months, after which another consultation may be required to check for any change in symptoms prior to treatment.
Prices are a guide to the costs and the exact price can only be determined once the surgeon has examined you in person. Call 0207 386 0464 OR email [email protected] for advice and help.

Haemorrhoids Banding Treatment Information
Treating haemorrhoids with banding
Haemorrhoid banding, also known as rubber band ligation, is a highly effective, minimally invasive solution for those who find that topical ointments and lifestyle changes are no longer providing relief. Typically performed in a clinical setting, this procedure offers a fast-acting alternative to traditional surgery.
The Mechanics of Rubber Band Ligation
During the procedure, a medical professional uses a specialised device to apply a small, medical-grade rubber band around the base of the internal haemorrhoid. This application restricts blood flow to the tissue. Because the base of a haemorrhoid lacks pain-sensing nerves, the procedure is generally painless. Over the course of 7 to 10 days, the haemorrhoid shrinks and naturally detaches during a bowel movement, often without the patient even noticing.
Ideal Candidates for Haemorrhoid Banding
This clinical treatment is specifically designed for Grade I, II, and III internal haemorrhoids. Because these occur on the lining of the rectum and anus where nerve endings are sparse, banding is the preferred office-based treatment for its high success rate and minimal downtime.
Limitations of Banding for External Haemorrhoids
It is important to note that rubber band ligation is strictly for internal cases. It is not an effective treatment for external haemorrhoids or severe Grade IV prolapsed haemorrhoids that protrude substantially. For these cases, alternative surgical or radiofrequency interventions may be required.
Alternative Haemorrhoid Treatments
For patients seeking different approaches, we offer several advanced alternatives:
- The Rafaelo® Procedure: A gold-standard treatment using radiofrequency technology to eliminate haemorrhoids in under 15 minutes.
- Sclerotherapy (Haemorrhoid Injections): A cost-effective option for Grade I and II haemorrhoids where a chemical solution is injected to shrink the tissue.
Professional Assessment at our Harley Street Clinic
To determine the best course of action, we recommend a private consultation at our London haemorrhoid clinics. You will meet with an expert colorectal surgeon for a physical examination and a personalised treatment plan tailored to your symptoms.
What to Expect During and After Treatment
The procedure is swift, usually taking only a few minutes. While the side effects are minimal, patients are free to leave immediately following the appointment. While you can drive yourself, some patients prefer to have an escort for comfort.
Transparent Pricing for Haemorrhoid Banding
As a non-surgical clinical procedure, banding is a cost-effective choice for many patients. Treatment at our London clinic is priced at £750, where clinically appropriate.
Recovery and Post-Procedure Aftercare
To ensure the best results and prevent recurrence, patients should follow these aftercare guidelines:
- Prevent Constipation: Increase fibre intake and hydration to ensure soft bowel movements.
- Avoid Straining: Straining during bowel movements can lead to new haemorrhoids.
- Activity Restrictions: Avoid heavy lifting for 24–48 hours post-treatment.
- Bowel Habit Changes: Expect some irregularity in your bowel movements for the first few days as the tissue heals.

Haemorrhoids Banding Questions & Answers
Banding (also referred to as ligation) is the most commonly used non-surgical haemorrhoid treatment in the world, so it has a very strong track record.
The haemorrhoid Banding/Ligation procedure is very straightforward:
- A band is placed tightly around the haemorrhoid.
- This only takes a few minutes and doesn’t generally require local anaesthetic.
A haemorrhoid ligature stays on for a fairly short time – just until the haemorrhoid falls off. The band cuts off the blood supply, causing the haemorrhoid to shrink. It will eventually drop off, usually in 3-14 days. You may not even notice it.
Once the band is in place, you may feel a dull ache or pressure. Severe pain is not common.
It’s fairly normal to see some dark red bleeding when the haemorrhoid falls off, although this is not always the case.
You can use a panty liner if you need to protect clothing.
Please contact us or seek emergency medical attention if you have any concerns about excessive bleeding. However, this is not common.
