Woman & Home magazine investigated the importance of protecting the skin around the eyes from the sun, with expert advice from Cosmedics Skin Clinics founder and Medical Director, Dr Ross Perry. 

The feature highlighted a recent study which suggested that after research many do not apply SPF properly around the eyes. This could increase the risk of skin cancer as well as premature ageing and brown spots.

Dr Ross Perry told Woman & Home readers:

“Applying SPF to our eyelids is incredibly important, as the skin around our eyes is up to 10% thinner than anywhere else.

“This makes the area much more prone to skin cancer, UV damage, brown spots and premature ageing”

How the Eye Area Gets Neglected

“The eyelid area is often neglected, particularly if we’re wearing sunglasses and therefore wrongly thinking our eyes are fully protected.

“We’re also fearful of getting sun cream in our eyes and causing irritation.”

UV Protection for the Eye Area

Dr Perry suggested:

“Apply a small amount of SPF< the size of a 10p piece, of at least SPF30.

“Beauty blender sponges are useful for this. SPF needs to be applied every two hours if you’re out in the sun for prolonged periods of time.

“Wear sunglasses with added UV filters and a wide-brimmed hat, and keep hydrated.”
