Expert Advice From Dr Ross Perry

As the hay fever season causes misery for millions of Brits, experts believe that a daily dose of vitamin D could help to ease the symptoms.

Dr Ross Perry provided his expert views for a feature in The Sun with timely advice that comes right in the peak of grass pollen season.

Grass pollen is responsible for 95% of pollen allergies season and typically lasts from May until August.

For many sufferers, hay fever is managed by avoiding the outdoors and taking antihistimines as the first line of defence, but medical experts are now suggesting that a daily vitamin D could help by boosting the body’s ability to resist irritation and inflammation caused by grass pollen.

Dr Ross Perry, GP and founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, told The Sun:

“Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system, particularly by supporting the function of T-cells and reducing inflammation. When vitamin D levels are low, the immune system may become more reactive to allergens such as pollen, leading to heightened hay fever symptoms. Additionally, vitamin D may help modulate the body’s inflammatory response.”

Ideally hay fever sufferers are advised to start taking vitamin D supplements well before hay fever season, so during late winter or early spring, in order for the body to build up immunity before the pollen commences.

Dr Perry continues:

“Because many people in the UK and Northern Europe are vitamin D deficient by the end of winter due to reduced sunlight, which is the main natural source of vitamin D. Since it plays a role in regulating immune response and inflammation, low levels may make hay fever symptoms more intense. By starting with the supplement around February or March , you’re giving your immune system better support before spring and summer allergens appear. It’s always a good idea to check in with your GP prior to taking any form of supplement, especially if you experience recurring seasonal allergies or low energy in winter months.”

As well as supplements, vitamin D can be topped up from sun exposure, but it is vitally important to avoid sun damage and be alert for suspicious blemishes. A daily supplement costing less than 10p could be a safer approach.

In addition to vitamin D, Dr Ross Perry had a few more simple suggestions for hay fever sufferers

“Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine that can reduce sneezing and watery eyes and can help lower histamine levels and support the immune function.

“Omega-3 (Fish Oil) is an anti-inflammatory and may reduce the body’s allergic response, and can help calm an overactive immune system.

“And finally probiotics help to support gut health, which is closely linked to immune balance.”

Vitamin D for Hay Fever – More Information & Advice

  • Vitamin D and Antihistimines:
    • Vitamin D is generally considered safe to use alongside antihistamines. There are no known significant interactions between vitamin D and common antihistamines.
    • While antihistamines provide relief from allergy symptoms by blocking histamine receptors, vitamin D’s role is more supportive and immune-regulatory, potentially complementing the effects of antihistamines.
  • Dosage:
    • The appropriate dosage of vitamin D can vary based on individual needs, age, and existing vitamin D levels.
    • In general, many adults benefit from a daily intake of 600 to 800 IU, but some may require higher doses, which should be determined under medical guidance.
  • Other Sources:
    • Aside from supplements, vitamin D can be obtained from sunlight exposure, fatty fish, fortified foods, and egg yolks.
  • Side Effects:
    • While vitamin D is generally safe, excessive intake can lead to toxicity, resulting in symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, weakness, and serious complications like kidney damage. Always stick to recommended dosages.
  • Contraindications/Underlying Conditions:
    • Individuals with conditions that affect fat absorption (like certain gastrointestinal disorders) or those taking certain medications (like steroids) may be at higher risk of vitamin D deficiency and may benefit from monitoring their vitamin D levels.
  • Consultation with a Healthcare Provider:
    • Before starting any supplement, including vitamin D, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.
