Varicose Veins Laser Treatment

Varicose veins

Varicose veins are bulging blue veins in the legs often in the calf, back of the knee and thigh areas. They can be unsightly, ache and in the worst cases break through the skin and ulcerate. They are common in men and women and often get worse throughout our adult lives.

Advances in medicine have now meant that surgical treatment for varicose veins is almost non existent and has been surpassed by laser or radiofrequency minimally invasive or keyhole treatments.

One stop vein clinic

The consultant will see you for a consultation where he will examine the legs. After this he will perform an ultrasound scan at the same appointment to identify the cause of the varicose veins.

Depending on the result of the ultrasound scan will determine which treatments are the most suitable. Same day treatments are offered for minor smaller varicose veins that can be treated with foam sclerotherapy. Where the veins are larger EVLA endovenous laser ablation is recommended.  This is then booked for a later date when convenient.

We are fortunate in having our own dedicated vein treatment centre so that we can offer the most affordable prices in London for varicose veins.

EVLA FAQ: Questions & Answers

How long does the laser procedure take?

Close Icon

EVLA laser vein removal takes between 1-2 hours.

The procedure begins with an ultrasound scan to mark the position of the vein. A local anaesthetic is injected around the vein to ease any discomfort. A fine probe is then inserted through a small incision, usually near the knee. Laser energy is delivered in short pulses to seal the faulty vein so that blood cannot flow through. The leg is then bandaged to reduce swelling and bruising.

Does EVLA varicose vein treatment hurt?

Close Icon

EVLA procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Some patients experience a little discomfort afterwards for which simple paracetamol may be all that is required in the first 24 hours.

The dressings/stockings might itch a bit but that is relatively minor.

Are there any side effects after EVLA treatment?

Close Icon

Common side effects include initial discomfort for 1-2 days and swelling and bruising that can last for a week or two. There might be some pigmentation changes to the skin which should settle in 1-2 months.

Is the long term safety OK after this treatment?

Close Icon

Yes, long term safety for this procedure is well documented.

Will I have bandages after treatment?

Close Icon

After the procedure bandages will be used to dress the area.

After a couple of days, these can be removed and you should then wear surgical support/compression stockings for a week.

Is there a future risk of DVT after EVLA treatment?

Close Icon

The risk of DVT at a later date is no more than normal (i.e. if you hadn’t had varicose veins treated with EVLA).

How long will the results last?

Close Icon

Results are permanent in over 95% of cases.

How soon will I see the results?

Close Icon

Most patients see a good instant result but for some patients the best results are at 6 weeks after the procedure.

Do I have to wear special stockings?

Close Icon

Normally bandages are worn for a couple of days, then surgical support/compression stockings for a week after that. We will recommend suitable stockings for you to wear during your recovery. These are easily hidden with clothing (i.e. trousers, long skirt).

Do I take time off work?

Close Icon

This is carried out as a day case procedure and there is no need for an overnight stay.  You can return straight home to put your feet up.  Most of our patients do return straight to normal activities the next day, but others may prefer an extra day or so to recover just in case.  This is a personal choice.

When will I see results after EVLA?

Close Icon

You will see straight away that the blue and lumpy veins have been removed. It will take a while for bruising to clear and we suggest the full results are to be expected after 4-6 weeks.

Where can I get this treatment?

Close Icon

This treatment protocol is exclusive to our Vascular Surgeon, Mr Parameswaran. It is available for private clients at our Putney Vein Treatment Centre.

If I remove veins, what happens to the blood flow?

Close Icon

The removal of varicose veins does not affect blood flow because other veins and especially the deep veins take over this job. It is thus perfectly safe and indeed beneficial to remove varicose veins.

Varicose Veins Treatment Review

“I was delighted with my treatment with Mr Sridhar.

“Not only was I able to walk home immediately after the procedure, but I found the whole experience very straightforward and quite unbelievably not even painful. Took 2 painkillers that day but apart from that I was able to carry on my normal week, apart from having to wear stockings which were a bit hot and itchy! All the bulges had gone and so had the aching and discomfort.

“Once the stockings came off there was virtually no bruising and only a few little marks which I understand will settle over a month or two.

“It was far cheaper than other places I looked at too, so I would highly recommend Cosmedics if you have varicose veins.”
