From Dr Ross Perry, GP and Founder/Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics

Yahoo! sought advice from GP, Medical Director and expert health advisor Dr Ross Perry for its report on hangovers, entitled:

“How to tackle that hangover”

The article explored whether hangovers get worse as you age. Dr Ross said:

“The concept of hangovers getting worse the older you get is a bit of a myth. The amount of uninterrupted sleep can play a part in the intensity of hangovers, and it can certainly be true that you don’t sleep as well the older you get, so that could play a part.”

General metabolism is also a factor.

How to feel better faster

Dr Perry shared the following tips:

  1. Drink plenty of water, both between alcoholic drinks and before bed, to keep the body hydrated. Alcohol is a diuretic, so even though you are drinking, you also need water to make up for the body’s water content lost as a result of alcohol.
  2. Eat well – avoid salty or greasy foods, as they can make you more dehydrated an nauseous. Instead, choose potassium-rich foods such as bananas and leafy greens to replenish lost electrolytes
  3. Paracetamol – best taken before bed to reduce the ill effects of excess alcohol
  4. Green juice – Dr Perry says:
“Those who combat the toxins by flushing them out with plenty of water, or a green juice, will suffer less and recover quicker in the day,”
  5. Fresh air/exercise – Even if you don’t feel like it, Dr Ross Perry says:
“Those who take exercise and fresh air after a night out will (also) recover quicker.”

There is no cure for hangovers and it’s best to avoid them if possible, but if you’ve overdone it and are feeling the consequences, , but there are ways to ease the symptoms
