Expert Advice on Hangovers in The Independent
From Dr Ross Perry, Founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics
The Independent sought advice from GP, Medical Director and expert health advisor Dr Ross Perry for its recent investigation into the phenomenon of hangovers.
The article opened:
“Why do some people get worse hangovers than others?
“Experts reveal the reasons some people are more prone to the after-effects of alcohol.”
The first reason given was that other behaviours have a real impact on how the body processes alcohol. Drinking on an empty stomach, when thirsty, while smoking or with other drugs can affect the way alcohol affects you.
Dr Ross Perry, GP and Founder/Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, told The Independent:
“Those who drink more water between drinks – and indeed before bed – should suffer less, as their body should be more hydrated.”
If you feel hangovers get worse with age, you’re not alone. However, Dr Ross Perry explained that age wasn’t necessarily the direct cause of that ‘morning after’ feeling. He said:
“The concept of hangovers getting worse the older you get, is a bit of a myth.
“Indeed, the amount of uninterrupted sleep can play a part in the intensity of hangovers, and it can certainly be true that you don’t sleep as well the older you get, so that could play a part.”
Dr Perry also raised the less well-known issue of mental health, which can affect how you experience the hangover feelings:
“Individuals who suffer from anxiety may indeed feel worse [due to] hangover-related anxiety, and for some, it can cause them to feel flat, moody, panicked and, in extreme cases, crippling anxiety.
“This would lead to an anxious, nervous outlook, often making the hangover feel worse mentally.”
Other issues raised in the article included:
- Height/weight
- Genetics
- Health conditions, such as vitamin B/D deficiency
