Astral Skincare Secret

Dr Ross Perry Advises

press news

The Daily Mail investigated the £2.99 skin cream which Joanna Lumley credits with her excellent skin.

Astral is a simple barrier skin cream which works to retain moisture in the skin and prevent drying out. Its formula contains no miracle ingredients and it’s been around for years, but Joanna Lumley and other celebrity fans including Amanda Holden swear by it.

It sounds too good to be true, but Dr Ross Perry, founder and Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, explained that the skin cream has definite benefits.

“We don’t need overpriced expensive creams.

“The thinking is – and it’s a fair, but incorrect, assumption – that the more expensive a cream, the better it will be.”

Dr Perry explains that this is not actually the case:

“Ageing is 95% down to your genetics and lifestyle. Moisturisers play a part, but that’s all.

“You need a barrier cream, to stop moisture evaporating from skin, and hydration provided by soaking into the skin.

“There is no such thing as a very good “light” moisturiser. In order for it to work, it must be greasy.”

Astral is based on 2 key oil-based ingredients – glycerin and lanolin. The makers say:

“Astral cream doesn’t contain any miracle ingredients.”

Dr Ross Perry welcomes the simplicity and advises caution about any product claims beyond moisturising or sun protection. He continues

“Creams advertising their contents including stem cells, gold and diamonds are not clinically proven to be of benefit.

“I’d be dubious that the concentrations in the creams could make any possible difference.”

The other attractive factor about Astral has to be the price, starting at just 99p for the smallest size, it has to be worth a try.

A good daily regime is the foundation of skincare, but many people now also seek professional skin treatments, such as those offered by Cosmedics Skin Clinics’ team of doctors. Popular options include:

  • Dermal fillers – facial filler injections replenish volume into the skin, smoothing out creases and lines
  • Lip filler – lip enhancement adds volume for a fuller, smoother and more youthful smile
  • Dermaroller – microneedling treatment used to stimulate collagen production

For patients with concerns about skin conditions, the clinic also offer appointments with their expert aesthetic doctors and GPs.
