The Metro investigated the potential health benefits of sunset lamps, which are popular and ‘trending’ on the internet at the moment.
Sunset lamps project an illusion of a sunset onto a wall, giving a room a warm and pleasant glow. It is easy to see the appeal after a winter of lockdown; as the effect is reminiscent of a tropical holiday sunset.

The question asked in The Metro is whether this gadget has any potential health advantages.
Dr Ross Perry, GP and Founder/Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, was invited to give his expert opinion. He suggested that using a sunset lamp could potentially boost your mood.
Ross explained:
“People are yearning for a holiday and warmer weather which we often associate with boosting our mood and reducing stress levels.
“Sunset lamps do exactly that, they boost your mood because they give the impression of hazy sunlight projected onto the walls on what could potentially feel like a dreary and drab day outside.
“The impression of a sunset and warm glow makes us feel happier. The soft lighting can turn any room into appearing cosy, warm and inviting which in turn can make us feel more relaxed, happy and eases the feeling of stress and anxiety.”
Ross said the device could be particularly useful for patients who suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression that is related to the seasons, leaving patients feeling low, tired and irritable during the winter months. Ross added:
“Some have found that a sunset lamp can help ease symptoms often associated with SAD as it can help to boost our mood and reduce stress levels.”
The feature did suggest that talking to the GP was important if there were any such concerns.
Ross also emphasised that the lamps don’t really have any other health benefits.
He concluded:
“Overall, a sunset lamp is fun, can ease stress and boost our mood somewhat – but little else in the way of health benefits. However, if something is going to make you feel a little better during this time, then it’s worth investing in one.”
