Private Cyst Removal Questions & Answers

Why has my GP refused to remove my cyst?

In recent years, the NHS has reclassified many minor skin procedures as “Procedures of Limited Clinical Value” (PLCV). This means that unless a cyst is currently infected, interfering with your vision, or causing a significant loss of physical function, the NHS is often restricted from providing surgery. They are required to prioritise life-threatening or urgent medical conditions.

At Cosmedics, we offer treatment for purely aesthetic reasons.

Do I need a GP referral to see you?

No. Unlike the NHS, where you must wait for a GP appointment followed by a long referral wait for a dermatologist, you can book directly with us. This “self-referral” process can save you months of waiting.

Will my GP still be informed of my procedure?

Yes. Even though you are being treated privately, we can (with your permission) send a full surgical report to your NHS GP. This ensures your medical records are kept up to date for your continuity of care.

What can happen if a cyst is left untreated?

Cysts grow with time and can become uncomfortable and a nuisance that means people become more self-conscious about them. If a cyst is on the face ideally you want to remove them when they are small so any scar will be less. If they are on the body or scalp when they reach 2-3 cm in size you would ideally time to remove them so any scarring is minimal.

If left untreated, benign cysts can cause complications including infection; where the cyst fills with bacteria and pus and becomes an abscess which leads to be a bigger wound and more scarring.

How do I know if it’s a cyst?

It can be difficult to tell whether a lump is a cyst or something else that might need treatment. Sebaceous cysts can be confused with lipomas that often sit deeper in the skin. These are also harmless and can be removed if they are bothersome.

It can be very difficult to self-diagnose a cyst, as there are so many types. Our doctors are expert in diagnosing and treating all sorts of lumps and bumps, blemishes and lesions. As well as cysts and lipomas, we also see and treat moles, skin tags and warts.

The best way to find out more is to book a face to face consultation with one of our experts. You’ll get a proper diagnosis as well as advice about treatment options.

How long is the waiting list compared to the NHS?

NHS waiting times vary widely but for “non-urgent” minor surgery can currently range from 18 weeks to over a year depending on your local Trust. We typically offer consultations and “See & Treat” surgery within as little as 24 hours to one week.

Is the surgical technique different in a private clinic?

While both NHS and private surgeons are highly skilled, private clinics often prioritise aesthetic outcomes. We use fine, cosmetic suturing and “minimal-scar” techniques designed to reduce the long-term visibility of the mark—a priority that the NHS, under resource pressure, may not always be able to accommodate.

My cyst isn't 'bad enough' for NHS treatment - can you help?

Yes. We do not believe you should have to wait for a cyst to become painful, red, or unsightly before you can seek treatment. We specialise in the removal of cysts at any stage—whether they are tiny “pearl-like” bumps or larger, long-standing large lumps.

What is "See & Treat" and why is it beneficial?

Our “See & Treat” service allows you to have your consultation and the surgical removal done in the same appointment, reducing the need for multiple trips and time off work.

On the NHS, you will often have an initial assessment and then be placed on a separate, long waiting list for the actual surgery.

How much does it cost to remove a cyst UK?

The treatment will generally last around 30 minutes and it is carried out under local anaesthetic. The cost for the removal of a cyst by surgical excision starts from £500. The cost for medium cyst is about £750 and larger cysts £850. The exact cost will be given when the doctor assess the cyst before your procedure.
