Treatment for ‘Weird’ Keratotic Horn

keratotic horn for excision removalThe skin is the body’s largest organ, so little wonder that there are so many conditions that can affect it.

Blemishes, lesions and growths are relatively common occurrence but they can be worrying as well as embarrassing – especially the more unusual or noticeable ones.

Keratotic Horn

One example is the keratotic horn, also known as cutaneous horn.

This looks somewhat like a cross between a wart and a skin tag. It grows outwards from the skin in a tiny ‘pillar’ or cone shape. However, unlike a skin tag, the growth is actually very hard, which is why it is termed a ‘horn’. The colour tends to be yellow/light brownish rather than a healthy and normal flesh colour.

Keratotic horns are actually made of compact keratin, which is actually protein, a natural component of the skin’s outer layer. They tend to occur more in patients over the age of 50, predominantly those around 60-70.

Is keratotic horn harmful?

Many keratotic horns are harmless, but some can be associated with viral warts while others may be precancerous or cancerous growths. Therefore it’s best to get them checked out as early as possible just in case there’s any medical risk.

Where the lesion is deemed to be ‘cosmetic’ there is generally little chance of having it removed on the NHS.

However, private clinics such as Cosmedics Skin Clinics specialise in offering removal of lesions and blemishes. In fact, Cosmedics is well known for its team of expert doctors and surgeons, who can diagnose skin blemishes, advise on the best treatment approach and remove the blemish too.

Skin Lesion Removal Doctors & Surgeons

Removal of cutaneous horns, moles, sebaceous cysts, lipoma, Sebaceous Hyperplasia Removal and a wide range of other skin growths and blemishes is frequently carried out at Cosmedics’ London clinics, especially now that many patients are refused treatment on the NHS, being classed as a ‘cosmetic’ issue. Their doctors and surgeons are trained to provide pain-free and efficient removal of all kinds of cysts. There are a number of attractive benefits to this private service:

  • Fast and efficient treatment
  • Choice of clinics in London
  • No waiting lists
  • Treatment can be same day as consultation if patient and doctor agree
  • Pain-free thanks to local anaesthetic
  • Treatment includes careful removal of the entire growth in order to minimise the risk of recurrence
  • Minimal-scarring techniques, so after healing, the scar is rarely noticeable at all
