Expert Advice in Woman’s Way

Dr Ross Perry provided his expert views on how pollution can affect the skin in Woman’s Way feature entitled ‘Pollution Woes’.

As the article explained, pollution cannot always be seen, yet it can impact the body in a variety of ways.

According to a new report by Swiss monitoring platform IQAir, only 17% of cities globally meet the World Health Organisation guidelines for air quality. This means that most cities in the world are at elevated risk of pollution-related health issues affecting the lungs and heart.

How does pollution affect the skin?

Dr Ross Perry, GP and medical director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, told Woman’s Way:

“One of the most significant ways pollution affects the skin is ow weakening its natural barrier.

“This damage can lead to dehydration, congestion and a dull lacklustre complexion.

“Over time, prolonged exposure to pollutants can accelerate signs of ageing, contribute to inflammation, and make the skin more sensitive and prone to breakouts.”

How to help skin affected by pollution

Dr Perry recommends double cleansing in the morning and at night to ensure that dirt particles are completely removed from the skin. He explains:

“This makes sure dirt is removed from the skin, including pollutants which are invisible to the naked eye.”

He also suggests paying careful attention to moisturising the skin to keep it well hydrated:

“Moisture twice a day and look for ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and squalane to keep the skin hydrated and resilient.

“Also. keen skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water to flush out toxins.”
