Daniel C. Mills, MD, President of ASAPS, said:
"The numbers have been increasing in our industry year-over-year for a variety of reasons "A healthy economy with the lowest unemployment rate since 2008, a desire on the part of baby-boomers and their offspring to remain competitive in a youth-centric workforce, younger generations recognizing the value in preventative anti-aging care, and of course, procedural and technological innovations that provide patients with more personalized options in both the surgical and nonsurgical categories. "In other words, there’s something for everyone."

Cosmetic Surgery vs Non-Surgical Treatments
Surgical procedures still account for the greater part of spend, but only just with non-surgical procedures now accounting for 44% of expenditure in the market. However, in sheer volume, 11,674,754 non-surgical procedures were carried out compared to 1,979,595 non-surgical procedures - over five times as many. What's more, non-surgical procedures are seeing faster growth at double the rate of surgical procedures:

Surgical procedures saw growth of 3.5% in 2016

Non-surgical treatments saw growth of 7% in 2016

Top Non-Surgical Procedures

Botulinum Toxin (4,597,886)

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers (2,494,814)

Laser Hair Removal (1,035,783)

Popular injectables saw a 10% increase overall in 2016 with BOTOX growing at 8% and hyaluronic acid increased by 16% (this includes dermal fillers such as Juvederm range).
ASAPS Data
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has compiled independent data on procedures every year since 1997. A questionnaire is made available to approximately 30,000 board-certified physicians and data obtained from approximately 750 - 850 per year from which nationwide statistics are projected. Overall the survey portion of this research has a 95% level of confidence.
