Dr Ross Perry’s expert advice on how working out can affect your skin was published in The Independent.
There’s no question that exercise is good for the body and mind, having a host of healthy benefits. However, the skin can sometimes suffer as a consequence.
The Independent asked skin experts to explain what to watch out for and how to care for your skin if you’re exercising a lot.
Benefits of exercise for healthy skin
Firstly, the benefits of exercise for your skin include:
- Boosts blood circulation, increasing delivery of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells. thereby supporting cellular function including regeneration/renewal and production of collagen; all promoting a more youthful appearance
- Stimulates lymphatic drainage, reducing fluid retention and puffiness
How sweat can affect the skin
If you’re exercising and getting hot, then you’ll most likely be sweating more. This is just the body’s natural way of regulating body temperature and it’s completely normal; but there are some things to be aware of:
- Leaving sweat on the body can create an environment where bacteria can thrive, potentially leading to inflammation, irritation and acne. The simple solution is to shower soon after exercising to clean your skin
- Outdoor exercise means more UV exposure, which is a prime cause of premature ageing. Sun exposure can also cause skin cancer, so it’s important to take this seriously and wear sun protection
Dr Ross Perry advised on how to choose suitable skincare products
“Avoid anti-ageing products, like vitamin C, retinol, AHA acids and certainly do not exfoliate directly after, as this will just irritate their skin,”
It’s best to keep it simple with gentle ingredients and plenty of moisturiser to lock in hydration.
