Do Natural Deodorants Work? Expert Advice
Dr Ross Perry was asked by Woman’s Own to give his expert views on whether natural deodorants are a good idea.
There seems to be more choice than ever in natural deodorant products at the moment. A deodorant is designed to act on the smell created by sweat. It won’t stop the actual sweating process and you may well still feel damp.
Dr Ross Perry, GP and founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics told Woman’s Own:
“It’s a natural process to sweat purely because it’s a temperature regulation process.”
Excessive Sweating
For many patients, the problem is not the odour of sweat, but the embarrassment caused by visible wet patches that can develop in the underarms/armpit area. The condition is referred to as excessive sweating, which is medically called hyperhidrosis. Switching from antiperspirant to deodorant is unlikely to be effective here. In fact, it could well be counterproductive, as the sweat can flow even more freely without antiperspirant to help reduce it.
There is a medical treatment for this condition. BOTOX® injections can be delivered into the affected area to stop the sweating process. The treatment works to decrease the activity in the sweat glands, which means that the excessive sweating is really reduced and wet patches become a thing of the past.
Dr Ross Perry explains:
“The injections are painless and are very simple to administer.”
