Waiting for BELKYRA® (Kybella) UK
It is just over 2 years since the FDA approved Kybella for treating fat under the chin (29th April 2015) and its arrival in the UK is eagerly awaited.
The UK product will be known as ‘BELKYRA®‘ and Cosmedics Skin Clinics has already built up a considerable waiting list of patients who are keen to have treatment as soon as it becomes available.
What is BELKYRA®?
This product is an injectable treatment which will be licensed specifically for the treatment of double chins, or fat beneath the chin area.
BELKYRA®is based on deoxycholic acid, a substance which is already produced naturally in the body. The function of deoxycholic acid is to help the body to absorb fat.
With Belkyra treatment, the injection of the fat-absorption agent literally destroys the fat cells, breaking down deposits of fat in the area. The result is a smoother and leaner profile and results are long-lasting, as once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
In trials, patients noted not only a reduction in the amount of fat under their chin, but also an improvement in the emotional impact of receiving treatment, as it is an issue many had felt self-conscious about.
Demand for Chin Treatments
Doctors in the USA, where Kybella (USA name for BELKYRA®) treatment has been available for over a year, have seen significant demand for treatments to tackle chin fat.
In 2014, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) reported:
- 68% of consumers are bothered by ‘submental fullness’ (fat under the chin)
- This is nearly as much as the 71% who were bothered by lines and wrinkles around their eyes
Fat under the chin can affect both men and women of any age. It is not necessarily linked to excess weight as the area is often resistant to diet and exercise.
Until BELKYRA® (Kybella), treatment options for submental fullness have been either surgical options such as liposuction, non-surgical treatments using handheld devices or aggressive weight-loss regimens with potentially limited improvement.
BELKYRA® UK Approval
BELKYRA® is awaiting approval from the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), the official body which licenses medicines and healthcare devices for the UK market.
Unfortunately, this is a slow process. We’re currently expecting summer 2017 and will update this page as soon as we have any more information.
Allergan Chief Commercial Officer, Bill Meury, said:
“BELKYRA® provides physicians with one of the first clinically evaluated and approved treatments for their patients who are bothered by fullness under the chin. We are very excited to receive the marketing authorisation for BELKYRA® in Sweden and we are expecting more countries to follow in the next months.
“We believe BELKYRA® will be a breakthrough treatment in Europe, as it has been in the United States and Canada, and it complements our established medical aesthetics portfolio. We look forward to introducing BELKYRA® to other countries around Europe over the coming months, as we secure the additional national approvals.”
Cosmedics intend to offer the treatment as soon as it becomes available. Anyone interested is invited to contact email@example.com to request being put on the waiting list.
