Top Santé magazine looks at thread veins this month, with expert advice from GP and founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, Dr Ross Perry.
The feature is entitled:
“Spotlight on Thread Veins”
The article explains that this is a good time to treat thread veins for clients who are noticing veins near the surface of the skin.
According to the British Vein Institute, thread veins are a widespread problem in the UK population:
- Around half of adults are affected
- Women more prone than men due to hormonal influences
- Likelihood of experiencing thread veins increases with age
Top Santé asked Dr Ross Perry to explain what thread veins are. He said:
“Thread veins are tiny, superficial blue-ish, purple or red veins, predominantly on the legs but which can also occur on the face and body.
“They’re more common from the age of 30.”
Top Santé gives some of the key facts about how and where thread veins occur:
- Stem from normal veins but grow bigger than usual, making them more visible
- Most common areas on the body are ankles, inside knees and outer thighs
- Most common facial areas are cheeks, chin, nose
Dr Ross Perry told Top Santé what causes thread veins:
“While leg thread veins are related to family history, pregnancy and co-existing varicose veins, facial ones can often be down to sun exposure or trauma.”
So bruising or wounds can give way to thread veins after they’ve healed.
Dr Perry continued:
“They don’t tend to itch or ache, like varicose veins can, but the main concern is the appearance, which can become very noticeable.”
Why Winter is Good for Thread Vein Treatment
Dr Perry explained:
“Often treatments are best done when the areas are not going to be exposed to sunlight for a few weeks afterwards.
“These veins provide no real function so it’s perfectly safe to remove them.”
Thread Vein Treatment Aftercare Tips
- After laser treatment, wear high sun protection – even in winter
- After sclerotherapy, wear compression stockings as directed. These can be warm to wear, so much more tolerable in winter
