At New Year many of us make resolutions to improve our health yet there’s one fairly quick check which is often overlooked. Yet a mole check could save your life.
Checking for new or changing moles is a regular task which doctors at Cosmedics Skin Clinics recommend everyone should carry out.
It only takes a few minutes to check over the body, top to toe, for any new, changing or suspicious moles or blemishes.
Figures show that around 7 people a day die from skin cancer in the UK. Yet early identification of any issues means that the lesion can be quickly removed, giving the best chances of a full recovery.
- It’s easiest to work with a family member or friend, otherwise use a mirror for the bits you can’t see
- Review the whole body from top to toe. Go methodically so as not to miss anywhere. DO check the bits that don’t see the sun too – in the hair, ears, toes and intimate areas
- Look for any new or ‘odd’ looking moles. Dr Ross Perry calls it the ‘ugly duckling sign’ – a mole which looks different and peculiar compared to the others. It could be asymmetrical, have patchy or odd colouring or uneven borders. Any odd behaviour such as itching, bleeding, oozing or other is also a potential warning sign
- The important thing is to check regularly – ideally once a month
In case of any concerns, Dr Perry says:
“… most people would be able to spot the one abnormal-looking mole on a body, so it’s just so important you take the time to check.”
“If you’re worried about anything then go to your GP and they can refer you on if something looks concerning.”
Those who’d prefer to be seen by a doctor might wish to book a full full body mole check. This costs £190 at Cosmedics Skin Clinics and will take an inventory of your moles, logging the information for future comparison.
If it’s just a specific mole or group of moles you’d like to check, then a standard consultation is £50, which is discounted off the cost of any mole removal treatment carried out same day.
