Hello Magazine: How to Get Rid of Dark Circles

…like Kim Kardashian

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has admitted she struggled with dark circles beneath the eyes. Hello magazine investigated the potential treatments with advice from experts including Dr Ross Perry, founder and Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics.

The article explained:

“The area around the eyes is more delicate than the rest of the face, meaning it can need a little more help when it comes to fine lines and wrinkles. But just why do we get dark circles and what can we do about them?”

Dark circles are actually caused by the blood vessels sitting below the surface of the delicate skin beneath the eyes. They can appear darker for a number of reasons, including genetic factors (i.e. a tendency that runs in families) as well as external issues such as lack of sleep, poor diet, iron deficiency, sun exposure and rubbing the eyes.

Expert Advice on Dark Circles

Dr Ross Perry says that eye creams are limited in benefit and even cosmetic treatments are not the answer. He told Hello Magazine:

“Unfortunately there is no miracle cure for getting rid of dark under eye circles.

“Lots of women are convinced to try fillers but in my opinion it only makes the under eye area look as though work has been done and not particularly effective. Lasers are also available but again costly and don’t really address the problem, and as much as creams advertise and promise to get rid of dark circles, unfortunately they really don’t work so ladies please save your money and just invest in a good concealer.”

Other simple and economical tips for improving dark circles include:

  1. ensure that you are getting enough sleep, as sleep deficiency makes the eyes look tired
  2. review your diet and ensure you are eating well with plenty of fresh veg, salad and fruit as well as proteins
  3. protect the skin against sun damage, which can cause premature ageing and worsen the appearance of dark circles or eye bags
