Face-washing dying out!

newsBack in the first half of the 20th Century, a good beauty routine meant little more than soap and water twice a day, perhaps with some face cream.

Nowadays, skincare has got a lot more sophisticated. Washing with soap and water has been replaced by disposable facial wipes or creams with cotton wool. The fact that many (most?) of us shower each day does much to help remove surface dirt too.

However, in the current cost-conscious economy, Debenhams has spoken out reminding the nation of the cost-effective beauty benefits of the washcloth.

Spokesperson Michelle Dowdall said: ‘We believe that the flannel is one of the beauty world’s forgotten secrets. Everyone has forgotten how cleaning your skin with a flannel every day is one of the best ways to remove excess oils and dead, dull skin. The humble flannel should be an essential part of everyday beauty therapy.

Caroline Hirons, beauty industry expert and blogger, supports the concept of old-fashioned washing: ‘I have always used flannels in my facials and recommend them to my readers every week in my online clinic. They are far more effective in removing makeup, dirt and grime than a muslin cloth due to their weight, size and most importantly, their ability to retain heat for longer. ‘Flannels are more affordable and therefore – more hygienic – I recommend using a fresh one every day.’

As well as cleaning the skin, flannels also have a gentle exfoliation, giving a healthy colour to the complexion.

If you are thinking of returning to the flannel, here are some tips:

  • Clean flannel each day – they are washable!
  • Don’t rub too hard
  • Avoid harsh soaps – a gentle face wash is better for your skin
