Laser hair removal is very popular, allowing patients to achieve excellent results in a short space of time.
However, it has not entirely replaced other forms of hair removal.
Electrolysis is actually the only medically approved form of permanent hair removal
- approved by the British Medical Association
- approved by the FDA in America
Although far less efficient than laser hair removal, electrolysis is still a fairly commonly used procedure especially for facial hair removal, where a smaller area is being treated. It can be a good choice to target specific problem hairs on the bikini line, top lip, chin, around the nipples, or on an awkward mole for example. It is also a good choice when patients are not suitable for laser hair removal.
During electrolysis, the therapist will use a very fine sterile probe to apply electric current to each individual hair follicleone by one. The heat of the electric current destroys the root of the hair, preventing further growth.
Because electrolysis targets hairs individually, it can be a more painful and time-consuming procedure than other hair removal treatments, such as laser hair removal. Each follicle needs to be treated for around one minute before the surgeon moves to the next.
Because hairs grow at different rates and some hairs will require more than one treatment to be fully stopped, patients should expect to book a course of treatments to complete an electrolysis procedure.
For larger areas such as the underarms, legs, back or bikini line, Laser Hair Removal has become the favoured choice as it treats a larger area with fewer sessions, making it a more economical choice than electrolysis. However, laser hair removal is not always the best choice.
