Cosmetic Treatments Up as Surgery Declines

scalpel surgeryThe latest figures from BAAPS – the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons – show that cosmetic surgery in the UK is in a downward trend, with procedures dropping by 40% in 2016 compared with 2015.

Yet former BAAPS president says that anecdotal evidence points to non-surgical procedures gaining in popularity with more patients choosing injections or peels in favour of surgery.

The point is perhaps illustrated by the biggest fall being for brow lifts, down 71% on the previous year. This is a procedure for which the non-surgical equivalents have become quite sophisticated and effective.  BOTOX is well known as a wrinkle relaxing injection, but careful use of BOTOX can lift and sculpt the brows without surgery.

Another alternative is the 8-point face lift, an advanced non-surgical treatment which uses long-lasting dermal fillers, injected in a series of 8 precise points, to ‘lift’ the facial tissues, providing a remarkable rejuvenation effect without surgery.

Non-surgical treatments offer significant potential cost savings for the patient, but there are other advantages too. Compared to surgery, procedures are much ‘easier’, being a short appointment rather than a hospital stay. Recovery is faster and results are likely to be softer as there is no skin removed; although for significant amounts of excess skin, there are limits to what non-surgical procedures can achieve.

Commenting on the decline in surgical procedures, surgeon Rajiv Grover, consultant plastic surgeon and former BAAPS president, said:

“It’s worth, however, remembering that the non-surgical sector is rife with lax regulation, maverick behaviour and unethical promotional gimmicks, so the public must remain vigilant.

“Non-surgical does not, and never has, meant non-medical.”
