Overview

Thread veins typically occur on the face, legs and body.

Face thread veins are treated by laser to seal off these unsightly red blemishes that often occur either due to sun damage or due to family genes.

Leg thread veins that are an unsightly blue-reddy colour and often found on the back of the knee, thighs and lower legs, are treated by an injection called sclerotherapy that seals off the veins.

Procedure

Small thread veins on the face or on the legs can be removed by laser treatments. These treatments only take a few minutes and the results are instant. There is some slight redness that may last 2 to 3 days.

For the blue / purple larger leg veins, a solution is injected into the vein to cause it to collapse and stick together. This is not painful and only takes a few minutes. A small plaster is put on top and you can return to work. More than one treatment session may often be required. If the veins are very small, laser treatments can also be used in conjunction with injections for the best results.

Aftercare

For laser treatments to the face, only good moisturisiing and sunblock is required for up to a week.

For leg thread vein treatments, stockings should be worn for a week to help compress the treated areas if they are large. Exercise should be avoided for the first 3 days.

Injection sclerotherapy may eliminate the need for an invasive surgical procedure. A few areas on each leg can be treated during a session. Usually, a series of treatments will be necessary to treat all the existing veins.

The entire treatment session takes no longer than 15 minutes, and you can walk out with no discomfort afterwards.

No. Only, a mild scratch-like discomfort that is over in seconds.

Can I return to work and normal activities?
In most cases ‘yes’, however sometimes stockings need to be worn for 3 days afer treatment to the legs.

Are there any side-effects from the thread vein treatment?
Occasionally you get some bruising and redness which settles in a week or so. Rarely some light brown marks can be left where the vein once was, but this normally settles.
