Laser Treatments

LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Other treatments that can commonly be described as lasers include LED's (light emitting diodes) and various other 'Light Sources'.

Lasers have made what was seemingly impossible 10 years ago now truely possible in dermatology and medicine as a whole. The latest lasers are able to remove or improve:

  • tattoos
  • port wine stains, birth marks, other skin disfigurements
  • mole, skin tag and wart removal
  • hair removal
  • skin tightening
  • stretch marks
  • acne

Unfortunately contrary to popular belief they are not magic wands that will heal any skin conditions. It is possible that scarring can happen even in the most experienced hands. This why is it essential to have any laser skin treatments assessed by a qualified professional. In the case of lesion removal, this should be a doctor; then either the doctor an experienced medical member of staff will perform the treatment.

Laser Mole Removal

Moles that are flat and light colored are often difficult to remove as they often leave some sort of scar.

Laser mole removal offers an alternative to surgery or chemical methods of bleaching moles. Whilst it does not guarantee to leave normal looking skin it can improve some otherwise disfiguring moles. Each mole is assessed by our doctors to see if laser mole removal is appropriate. We would normally advise as to whether this type of method would give a beneficial result.

Laser Types

The type of laser required depends on the lesion as some lasers have different wavelengths of light that are more appropriate for certain skin conditions. Again one laser does not cure all and patients at Cosmedics will always get unbiased advice and who would be the most appropriate laser specialist to see. We often refer to laser specialists for difficult moles if we feel this would give a better result.

The lasers that can be used are generally Intense Pulse LIght lasers, KTP or ND-Yag lasers that emit specific wavelengths of light to specifically target the darker color pigment in the skin and evaporate it. Our mole removal 'laser' is a cautery device that helps laser off moles, warts, verruca, spider veins and blood spots.

Radio surgery is a precise way that cuts the moles away from the skin leaving almost no bleeding as it cauterizes the wound with a special magic wand like device.

Other Options

For raised moles the best procedure is usually shave excision surgery and for suspicious moles by ellipse excision surgery.

London laser clinics are available in the city, knightsbridge, harley street, putney and canary wharf.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has revolutionised the lives of many women and men. It offers the patient permanent results in hair reduction, so that daily shaving, or regular waxing become a thing of the past.

Popular applications of laser hair removal are:

  • Women - underarms, bikini or legs - a convenient solution to save the hassle, cost and skin damage caused by other hair removal solutions
  • Women with PCOS (poly cystic ovary syndrome) - a solution to excess facial or body hair which is caused by PCOS and can cause significant embarrassment
  • Women and men with ingrowing hair, which can cause inflammation and irritation. This is often caused by regular shaving, waxing or epilation. Laser hair removal gets to the root of the problem and stops further hair growth
  • Men - a solution to "problem hair" such as mono brow, or excessively hair back, torso or shoulders
  • Men - athletes, cyclists and bodybuilders choose laser hair removal to give them hair-free bodies to improve performance in their chosen sports

Laser hair removal works by targeting hair follicles in the growth phase, heating the follicle in order to destroy it. This process needs to be repeated in a course of treatments in order to tackle each follicle in the growth phase.

With the latest technology, this is not painful at all.  Cosmedics use the Soprano pain-free laser hair removal system.

Laser Skin Tightening

Laser skin tightening offers patients with a wide variety of skin conditions the option of treatment without needles, chemicals or surgery.

  • Loose jowls - bringing back tightness and smoothness
  • Saggy neck skin
  • Eyebags
  • Eyelids
  • Droopy brow/forehead
  • Nose to mouth lines
  • Loose, saggy skin -  for example, tightening loose skin on the abdomen after childbirth or bingo wings after weight loss
