Skin Tags

Skin tags are tiny areas of skin that have created a loose piece of tissue that protrudes from the surface. They vary in size from a few millimetres to a larger version that can be a few centimetres known as a papilloma that often dangles from the skin.

What causes skin tags ?

They are caused by skin friction and rubbing in areas under the breasts, arms and inbetween legs and thighs. The neck is also a common area due to shirts rubbing. Your family history can be another cause of these skin lesions particularly if they occur around the eyes and eyelids.

Occasionally groin, genital and anal skin tags can occur that may be caused by a virus creating a warty skin tag.

During pregnancy skin tags can be quite common and  are perfectly safe to remove.

How do you remove skin tags ?

The removal of skin tags is simple and quick. Most require a medial professional to remove so it is done safely and without any risk of infection or recurrence. Home remedies include tying a piece of cotton thread around the base tightly and in 2-3 days it should fall off.  Creams to remove these often leave more of a scar and can be very destructive so are best avoided. Unfortunately skin tag removal on the nhs is no longer performed as it is see as a cosmetic treatment.

Private medical treatments for skin tag removal include freezing, surgery and laser and prices start from £80 at all our London and Bristol clinics.
