What difference will it make to my life?

Patients that we have treated say this has been the best thing they have done as it allows them to not worry about the sweating or the fact it might happen when you don't want it to.

What happens during the Botox® treatment for excessive sweating?

You are given a small injection which is painless and takes about 5 to 10 minutes to do. You can return straight back to work but we advise against any heavy exercise that day. The effect lasts for 5 to 6 months.

Why does the excessive armpit sweating happen to me?

There is no known cause but very rarely it can be due to a medical condition such as over-active thyroid.

What is excessive sweating?

Normal sweating is a way to help keep the body temperature steady in hot weather, during a fever or when exercising. Excessive sweating / hyperhidrosis means that you sweat much more than considered normal. Even when you are not hot, anxious or exercising. you produce a lot of sweat.

Excessive sweating is classified as either focal or generalized. For more in-depth information click here

How does Botox® work?

Botox stops the nerve endings sending messages to the sweat glands and temporarily reduces the sweating. Botox is also commonly used to treat wrinkles by relaxing certain muscles of the face.

Patient Stories

Alison - SW London

Excessive Sweating

I have always suffered with underarm sweating since my teen years. I had tried every deodorant and anti-perspirant but none seemed to work. When I told a friend about how it was making my life difficult and that I was fed up with wearing clothes that did not show the sweat patches she mentioned the botox treatments. Dr Perry at Cosmedics came highly recommended. The initial consultation was great as I felt so at ease and not embarrassed as he told me it is very common and easily treated. I was quite anxious but the treatment was so quick and not painful at all. Then 2 to 3 days later POW! the sweating had stopped. I was amazed and it has now meant I feel far more confident at work and have bought a whole new wardrobe.

Rob - Wiltshire

Excessive Sweating

I work in a very stressful environment and have to give lots of presentations. My biggest worry was not my clients but the sweat patches on my shirts. I was very conscious about this sweating and it began to affect my confidence. As soon as I thought about the sweating it would then just make things ten times worse. Having seen Cosmedics and had what was a very simple 15 minute treatment life could not be better as the sweating has stopped and I can safely talk at meetings without the worry of patches of sweat being obvious.

Focal excessive sweating (focal hyperhidrosis)

This means that excessive sweating occurs in one or more of the following 'focal' places: palms of the hands, soles of the feet, armpits (axillae) or face. You sweat normally on the rest of the body. The cause is not known and it is not associated with any other conditions. It just seems that the sweat glands in these areas are 'overactive' or more sensitive than normal. In some people, it may 'run in the family' so there may be some genetic factor in causing it. It usually develops first in the teenage years, but it can develop at any age. Men and women are equally affected.

The severity can vary from time to time. It may 'come and go' and can be made worse by 'triggers' such as anxiety, emotion, spicy foods and heat. Anxiety about the sweating itself may make it worse. However, for most of the time, nothing obvious triggers the sweating. Focal excessive sweating usually develops under the age of 25. It affects about 3 people out of 100. It tends to be a long-term condition, but symptoms improve in some cases over time.

If you have focal excessive sweating, you do not need any tests as there is usually no known underlying cause. Your doctor may suggest one or more of the treatments, such as strong anti-perspirants, or if these don't work then botox injections are a very good treatment to stop sweating. They last for 6 to 9 months and patients find them a real help.See our London and Bristol clinics for to stop excessive underarm sweating

Generalized excessive sweating (generalized hyperhidrosis)

This means that you sweat more than normal 'all over'. This is less common than focal excessive sweating and if concerns you then you should see your doctor.

What are the treatment options for focal excessive sweating?

General tips and advice

The following may be all that you need if the condition is mild, and may help in addition to other treatments in more severe cases.

If you have armpit sweating:

Aluminium chloride - a strong antiperspirant

If normal antiperspirants do not work, you doctor may advise an antiperspirant that contains aluminium chloride. It tends to work best in the armpits. However, it may also work for sweating of the palms and soles. Brands include Driclor and Anhydrol Forte. Note: aluminium chloride antiperspirants often cause skin irritation or inflammation and may outweigh the irritation.

Iontophoresis

This is a treatment that uses electrical stimulation. It is used mainly to treat sweating of the palms and/or soles. Treatment involves putting the affected areas (usually hands and/or feet) into a small container filled with water and a small electrical current. The exact way this helps to treat sweating is not known. However, iontophoresis does not work in every case and has in the past been a hospital treatment. You can now however buy a machine for home use.

Botulinum toxin injections

This is an option that usually works well for armpit sweating. Treatment consists of many small injections just under the skin in the affected areas. The botox (link as above) stops the nerves in the skin that control the sweat glands from working. Botox is sometimes used to treat sweating of the palms and face. It is also very commonly used for wrinkles injections to reduce the signs of aging.

The botulinum toxin lasts about 6-7 months. Repeat treatments help reduce the sweating and last longer.

Medication

Medicines that block the effect of the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands are sometimes used. These medicines are not used very often. This is because the success of these medicines is variable. Also, side-effects commonly occur. For example, a dry mouth and blurred vision.

Surgery

A sympathectomy operation to destroy the sympathetic nerves that control sweating, often by keyhole surgery, is almost the last resort.

Liposuction and subcutaneous curettage are methods of removing sweat glands from the deep layer of skin. They do not always work, and there may be bruising or scarring.
