Botox®

Botox® has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, but what exactly is it? An abbreviation of 'Botulinum Toxin' it is a non-surgical treatment that, when injected into the forehead, helps smooth frown lines by reducing the contractions of the muscles that cause frowning. Botox® was first used in 1980 to treat squints in children and has developed into a popular non-surgical procedure to help reduce frown lines in adults. Carried out at Cosmedics clinics around London, Botox® injections are an inexpensive and effective way to combat the obvious signs of ageing without resorting to cosmetic surgery.

How does Botox® work?

Below the skin are a series of muscles that contract each time we smile and make other facial gestures. Over time the skin becomes less elastic and so wrinkles appear. The way that Botox® works is by partially relaxing the facial muscles, preventing their contraction and therefore helping to smooth those wrinkles. The process takes only about ten minutes to administer, lasts between four and six months and can be safely repeated to restore the youthful look. It will however take about four to seven days after being injected before the Botox® treatment has the desired effect and the wrinkles start to reduce.
