About moles
Moles also known medically as “naevi” are commonly found on the face and body. They can catch on clothing or when shaving as well as being cosmetically unacceptable. At Cosmedics we are able to remove these facial and body moles either by surgery or laser. The treatments normally take about 20 minutes and are without pain. New advances in surgery mean that you often don’t need stitches either and you can return to work immediately after the procedure. Cosmedics normally sends the mole away for testing as in a tiny minority of cases the mole may be cancerous. We do offer mole checks prior to the mole removal and medical advice on how to reduce your skin cancer risks.
If you experience any redness, itching or bleeding from a mole or changes in colour or size it is advisable to consult with a doctor to see if mole removal is necessary.
Mole removal can be administered through the following procedures. The most common method is to remove the mole surgically by a tangential or 'shave' exision so that scarring is minimal and no stitches are required. Occasionally if we feel the mole is suspicious or too big we will excise it and use stitches. The surgical treatments are safe and quick and should last no more than about 20 minutes. They are also fairly painless, as the doctor will use a local anaesthetic. Finally there is laser mole removal which is usually only suitable for flat moles. However, this treatment will require more than one visit to the doctor as it has to be repeated on average 2-3 times to be effective.
There may be a small amount of pain after the mole has been removed and there will usually be a scab or light scarring depending on which mole removal treatment you opt for but these should all clear up within 2-3 weeks of the treatment.
